The City of Oldsmar is one of several Pinellas County municipalities participating in a nationwide cleanup event on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017.
The 2017 International Coastal Cleanup is a joint effort between the Ocean Conservatory and Keep Pinellas Beautiful and is designed to “eliminate the impact of marine and terrestrial debris within our Pinellas County ecosystems,” according to a webpage dedicated to the Oldsmar event.
City officials hope the cleanup will go a long way towards keeping the Oldsmar’s miles of park space and shoreline beautiful.
“The City of Oldsmar is hosting this multi-site cleanup event, in partnership with Keep Pinellas Beautiful, to not only help maintain our incredible coastline, but also to bring the community together in our valuable and fragile natural spaces,” Trista Brophy, Oldsmar’s new sustainability coordinator, said via email.
“This cleanup is just the beginning of many opportunities to get involved with sustainable initiatives that help keep the City of Oldsmar the best place to live, work, and play!”
According to the website, registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. at the tent located next to the tennis courts at Bicentennial Park.

Volunteers are being asked to park in the lot at the park, which is located at the entrance to Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve at 423 Lafayette Blvd.
At 8:45, safety information and instructions will be delivered by event organizers and group leaders. You must be present for this to participate.
Each group will then be assigned to a nearby satellite location: Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve; Mobbly Beach; Veterans Memorial Park; R.E. Olds Park; the boat ramp & trail; and the *Oldsmar Paddle Trail.
(*A limited number of kayaks will be available on a first-come, first serve basis for those cleaning up the Paddle Trail.)
Officials said tickets are not needed to attend, and cleanup supplies will be provided on site.
The cleanup is expected to run from 9:00-11:00 a.m.
