Horsepower For Kids summer camp closing after 20+ years

After more than 20 years operating a summer horseback riding camp in Oldsmar, Horsepower For Kids owner Armando Gort is closing the popular camp due to an ongoing battle with city officials.

Horsepower For Kids, a nonprofit facility located on Racetrack Road on the Tampa/Oldsmar border, will close its popular summer horseback riding camp after 21 years next month.
Horsepower For Kids, a nonprofit farm located on the Tampa/Oldsmar border, will close its popular summer horseback riding camp next month after 21 years of operation.

After a lengthy battle with Oldsmar city officials, marked by mudslinging and longstanding animosity on both sides, Horsepower For Kids owner Armando Gort has decided to close his summer horseback riding camp.

According to a message posted on the nonprofit’s Facebook page, the popular camp will close when the 2016 camp ends in early August.

The message, posted by Gort on July 6, reads:

“It is with much sadness that I have decided to make this years summer camp my last one, after 21 yrs and over 15k kids. I no longer have the energy it takes to run the camp. It saddens me that so many kids are going to miss the opportunity to make great memories. The farm is not going to close . I’m going to concentrate on my passion of animal rescue. I feel I have given enough of myself to all for the last 21 yrs, the time has come for me to take a break. Thank you to all the parents who have trusted me with their kids all these years. Its my hope that in some way I made a difference in their life. Thank you Armando Gort.”

The news comes on the heels of Gort’s supporters making yet another appearance at a City Council meeting, part of an ongoing attempt to get city officials to open the public horse trails at Oldsmar’s Mobbly Bayou Preserve.

But although the council finally agreed on Tuesday night to put the issue on a meeting agenda in the future, Gort said it’s too late to change his mind.

“I’ve changed my mind before because I’ve felt bad for the kids, but I’m not gonna do that anymore,” Gort told Oldsmar Connect by phone on Thursday.

“I’m glad they finally got it on the agenda, but that doesn’t change things for me.”

Gort’s decision comes after a long battle with the city, one that he claims is rooted in personal animosity and even bigotry, towards him.

When asked why he thinks officials have refused to reopen the public trails at the preserve that his campers have been using for years, Gort didn’t mince words.

Oldsmar City Manager Bruce Haddock.

“All of this stems from a personal vendetta by (City Manager) Bruce Haddock, and it’s because I’m gay,” Gort said.

“He’s a grown man and he acts like a little kid, and most people are afraid to go up against him,” he added.

“But I’ve always followed my own drum, and I believe in standing up for the truth.”

Those strong statements come at what appears to be the end of a decades-long feud between the city and Gort’s nonprofit facility, which also features a petting zoo and a rescue sanctuary in addition to the riding camp.

The final straw apparently came when council members unanimously approved the zipline aerial adventure park at the preserve while steadfastly refusing to reopen the trails, even after development on the Hillsborough County side of Race Track Road forced the farm to abandon the trails on that side.

The zipline adventure park opened in Oldsmar last month.

“I’ve brought more people here who’ve never heard of Oldsmar than the zipline ever will,” Gort said. “But they’ve never promoted it. All they’ve done is set up roadblocks to prevent me from being successful. If they were to do it now, it would be all about promoting the zipline park, not about helping me.”

“We have been struggling for years now, and I don’t want it any more,” he added, noting it costs $30,000 per month to operate the camp. “I’m not giving them any more of my money, because they’re all crooked.”

With less than a month to go before he closes the camp for good, Gort said he is planning one last party for past and present campers.

After that, he plans on focusing on the rescue sanctuary portion of the facility, opening it to the public a few days a week while hosting periodic fundraisers, such as his popular annual fall festival.

Horseback riding is the life blood of HorsePower For Kids, according to owner Armando Gort (not pictured).

But while the summer camp will be closing, Gort said he’s not ready to pack up and leave the area just yet.

“I’m not giving in and leaving here, I’m just quitting the horseback riding,” he said.

“I’m just going to concentrate on my little rescue animals and fundraisers. I’m not giving in and leaving here until I’m ready to go.”

Before ending the conversation, Gort attempted to convey how much the camp has meant to him, and to the many kids who have attended it, over the years.

“This place has been an escape and a happy place for so many kids for so many years, and I hate to have to do this,” he said. “I love the animals, and I love the kids.”

“But city officials have left me no choice. They have done an injustice to me and to the citizens of Oldsmar.”

I rarely speak out nor give my opinion about much but I have to say that I have personally witnessed what that farm (Horsepower for kids) has done for so many kids. I consider myself a hard working, strong man but couldn’t control my tears as I read this article.
What a disservice to this community (Oldsmar, Tampa, Pinellas, etc.)
Especially when we are witnessing so much ugly in our World today and we have something so good in front of our face but choose not to embrace it.
I challenge every City Official to visit Horsepower (first hand) and witness lives changing by the minute, children from broken homes, foster kids, handicap, autism camp, not to mention adult volunteers filling their hearts and souls with love from children and animals.
COME ON OLDSMAR RESIDENTS, IT”S TIME TO SPEAK UP AND STOP LETTING THE GOVERNMENT DICTATE OUR LIVES!

I appreciate your words Fred. I am a parent of two special needs children who are benefiting from this camp only this last summer (I did not know about it before). We are not Oldsmar residents but I wish with all my being that this was not happening.

We need to change this profit at all cost mentality ,which overpowers all else, including common decency. I truly hope there is another outcome to this. Thank you again for your sentiment.

I was a camp kid about 20 years ago, eventually becoming a camp counselor throughout my high school years. Makes me sad that kids will no longer get to experience this, but thank you Armando Gort for everything you have done for us kids. You have truly touched so many lives!

This is heartbreaking. I grew up here. I learned the value of life here. I learn how to be independent, self motivated, and a goal getter here at this farm. It saddens me that after everything Armando has done for the city of Oldsmar that they have turned their backs on him time and time again. This little piece of heaven on earth has changed so many lives. You wouldn’t believe as a camp counselor how many lives I got to change with the help of the farm. I saw little kids faces glow as I put them on their first pony, as I gave them their first flake of hay to feed a horse, as I handed them their ribbons at the end of the week for best costume or best all around. It’s sad that the city is has pushed Armando to this decision. My heart aches for the community of Oldsmar and all the kids who will never get to experience what Horsepower For Kids has to offer.

I grew up at Horse Power For Kids, but when I was there it was known as Hire a Pony. I grew up on that property learning important life lessons like respect ND how to take responsibility and to are for a living thing. Armondo is like my crazy uncle whom I live dearly. Horse Power for kids should be a tourist attraction and a land mark. I refuse to believe that my childhood home is about to close down. If this is true I will probably break down into tears because I literally was at that barn, since I was about 3. Being there taught me so much. I wish more children could grow up like I did. I say it should be labeled as a landmark and not closed down.

It’s a very sad day for all of the children who won’t get to go to horse camp there. Armando has a big generous heart. My daughter loved it there when she was young.

This is an absolute tragedy! My oldest son Jade learned so much about life and it helped me in my efforts of establishing an immense work ethic in him. The farm supported this ideology and as a single mom I was grateful and so was my father who was my hero! This has made him so successful today with the help of our village here with Armando and the families in our neighborhood. Armando was an inspiration to so many families lives and this is totally upsetting to all of us. I grew up with horses and moved into this area because of the horses. My father help me with the down payment on my house 24 yrs. ago when I was in my early twenties because we both thought this was the most beautiful place to raise children. Again this should not happen. The people of Oldsmar ( City Council, etc.) need to be empathetic to all that Armando & Horse Power For Kids has done for this community, helping to keep the entegrity of one of last slices of heaven in Florida. His family and volunteers have worked so hard to maintain a beautiful environment for people of all ages! The Gort family has done so much for the children, for the animals and for people who would not normally have the ability to experience interaction with animals and wildlife! Peace and prayers that God will help see this through❤

Amanda’s Farm has brought much joy to many children throughout the years it’s really a shame that egos got in the way of keeping that moving forward. So many children are going to miss out on the opportunity to learn what it’s like to have unconditional love from an animal. As well as the responsibilities of taking care of one. These kids could be on the streets selling drugs doing horrible things and instead decided to spend time at summer camp learning the love of an animal now thats going to be gone and all Oldsmar residents are going to feel that impact.

Oldsmar city council you should be completely ashamed of yourselves. Instead of each one of the commissioners personally investigating what this camp does for kids, you shut it out. If you had concerns on the environment, you could have put in limitations or regulations. This camp has reached out to THOUSANDS of children who needed more than a horse to ride. They got work that made them feel accomplished, the got friendship, they got love from Armando, and most importantly they had somewhere they wanted to go. Armando has worked with families who could not afford the camp, it was available to all.

Below I have copied an email from Mayor Bevis to me on February 5, 2016. It is true that they think Armando will sell out just like they would if they owned as much property as he does but they don’t know Armando that well and it has never been about money, always has been about what is best for the kids and his animals. Too bad the Oldsmar officials are not people of good character like Armando. Instead they are just envious of the property that he owns and like to act like they own Mobbly Preserve, which they do not, but at any meeting you will hear Bruce Haddock refer to the preserve as His and that will not happen on HIS PROPERTY.

Thanks for the email. What “process” are you wanting to start. The development is in Hillsborough County. Progress does come with a cost and when people start seeing dollar signs for their property that is way over what they paid they sell. I am guessing at some point someone will wave a big number in front of Armando to develop. Maybe not today or tomorrow but sure at some point. Land is hard to come by in this area and it is a great location,

In our troubled world today, our children need more people like Armando and this farm, children need to learn how to show love and affection and the best way is with animals. It is sad to see such a wonderful therapy for people to be eliminated. Less violence, less television, less internet, less child obesity, more farms, more animals, more children playing outside and interacting with others. In fact the City should promote these positive things for our community. I feel very bad for our children of today

I was one of the original camper members out here at armandos farm. It’s a darn shame what is happening in today’s world. Where we can never trust a person to watch our children any more. Armando is one of my idols. He picked us up when we were down. Listened to us and gave advice, a father to most who didn’t have much guidance. He never gave up on us. I started out at the farm when I was 8 years old. I am now 28 years of age. With out Armando’s life lessons on how to be kind and love each other I don’t exactly know where and who I would be today. It’s a shame that my children who are 3 and 5 will not get the same life experiences as I have as a child. Some one needs to give these people a wake up call. These kids are our future. These children need to grow and learn life as each day is not the same. Not allowing armando to finish what his mission was to help every kid is a shame. Armando I cannot give you enough praise for the way you raised us ladies. We are all successful withe families. Thank you for raising us and keeping us safe!!!! From myself and all your other children we love and thank you!!!

I’ve been running my autism summer camp program on Armando’s farm for 6 years now. He has so generously allowed us a space on his farm to give these special needs children experiences they would never have had elsewhere. There are no words to convey how much this farm has meant to our autism community! Here we were able to teach them compassion,, responsibility, pride in a job well done, teamwork and social skills. There are very limited places a child with autism can go and be as safe and happy as they are at Horsepower for Kids. The loss of the horses and the summer program is devastating to us and the many families we have served over the years. The Counsel should be ashamed of the actions leading to this closure. Prejudice from our city’s top officials should never be tolerated and I hope the citizens will remember this when it comes time to vote for their representatives!
