It’s no secret the City of Oldsmar is celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2016, as organizers have done a great job of publicizing the yearlong festivities by using everything from an informative website to commem-orative Christmas ornaments to help get the word out.

But with the New Year now upon us, the focus has turned from promoting to hosting the first Oldsmar100 event, with the first of four “Fifth Friday” concerts set to take place two weeks from tonight, on Friday, Jan. 29 from 5:00-10:00 p.m. at R.E. Olds Park.

According to Oldsmar City Council member, and Oldsmar100 chair, Dan Saracki, he expects the free, family friendly Fifth Friday concerts to play an integral part in the centennial celebration.

“In 2016 there are four “fifth” Fridays, and each one will have a different musical theme, like rock, country, reggae and golden oldies,” Saracki told oldsmar Connect last fall. “So it should be a lot of fun.”

Indeed, the initial Fifth Friday, which has a classic rock theme, has the potential to be a huge success, with Bay area supergroup the Black Honkeys headlining and local favorites Mr. Pickles performing as the opening act.

The next month with five Fridays in 2016 is April, and the concert on the 29th of that month will have a country music theme; July 29 will have a Caribbean feel, thanks to an infusion of reggae, and the final Fifth Friday concert of the series on Friday, Sept. 30 will feature a golden oldies theme.

In addition to the music, the events will feature food, drink, games and activities for kids, all set against the backdrop of the city’s waterfront park, which will soon feature some unique new artwork.

Saracki said he thought the idea for Fifth Friday concerts would be successful after seeing similar events in other Bay area communities.

He believes the concerts, as well as the other events they have planned, will provide ideal platforms to celebrate Oldsmar’s centennial.

“I came up with Fifth Fridays because I’ve seen how popular similar events in Dunedin, St. Pete and Safety Harbor have been,” he explained.

“My goal is to bring families together, and to get people to realize how great the City of Oldsmar is!”
