The Fifth Friday Sunsets concert scheduled for this Friday, July 29, at R.E. Olds Park, will be the final one of the year after officials decided to cancel the September event.
When the Oldsmar100 centennial committee first scheduled the Fifth Friday Sunsets concert series more than a year ago, the plan was to hold a themed concert at the end of each of the four months with five Fridays in 2016—January, April, July and September.
But while the July concert, a Caribbean Carnival themed show set for this Friday night, will take place as scheduled, organizers were forced to cancel the final show, which was slated for Friday, September 30, due to a scheduling conflict.
And while some may lament the loss of the Golden Oldies themed show, Oldsmar100 chair and City Council member Dan Saracki said there was a good reason behind the cancellation.
“I’m not sure if everyone knows this, but the September 30th Fifth Friday has been cancelled,” Saracki said during the City Council meeting on Tuesday, July 19.
“And the reason why we cancelled that was because the October 1st concert is the next day, and that would’ve been a stress on the volunteers and city staff to do both events.”
“So that has been cancelled and now we are focusing on the (centennial) concert.”
Indeed, the agreement to host the centennial concert on Saturday, October 1 at Tampa Bay Downs was finalized just recently.
The City Council unanimously approved the $50,000 show, dubbed the Legendary Voices of Rock and promoted by Tarpon Springs based Razor Entertainment, in May.
Saracki said a major marketing campaign is planned for the show, including television and radio ads and a promotional email blast, with much of it set to debut after this week’s concert.
“We’re going to have a lot of advertising start after our Fifth Friday,” Saracki said, adding, “July 29 is our last Fifth Friday, so come out and have some fun!”
