Junk in the Trunk event this Saturday to benefit Relay for Life of North Pinellas

An Oldsmar Relay for Life team is hosting Junk in the Trunk, a community yard sale, on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Oldsmar Sports Complex.

A Relay for Life of North Pinellas team is hosting Junk in the Trunk, a community yard sale, on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the baseball fields parking lot at the Oldsmar Sports Complex.

The event is being hosted by the Hearts of Hope team as a way to raise money for the American Cancer Society through vendor fees while allowing the sellers to make some cash as well.

According to co-organizer Barbara Walters, the inaugural Junk in the Trunk has quickly gained a following, with more than 30 spaces having already been sold.

“It’s done very, very well, especially for a first-year event,” Walters told Oldsmar Connect a few days before the event.

“I have about 33 people confirmed, and anyone can show up during the check-in period between 7:00 and 8:30 Saturday morning and pay the $15 fee and get in.”

Walters, who has extensive event coordination experience, said fellow RFL teams will be allowed to display their goods for no charge, and they may keep the fees of other groups they bring in.

“There’s no competition between the teams,” she noted, “because it’s all about benefitting a great cause.”

The Oldsmar Sports Complex is located at 3120 Tampa Road.

Junk in the Trunk vendors will have twin parking spaces at the park, located at 3120 Tampa Road, and they will be allowed to sell hand-crafted items, commercial goods, clothing, raffle baskets and items from their garage.

Vendors are responsible for their own tables and chairs, tents, space, merchandise and sales tax, and they are being asked to remain open throughout the duration of the event.

No electricity will be available, but there are restroom facilities on site, and Walters said food and drink, including hot dogs, chips and water, will be available for small fee.

She said she hopes the event, which was spearheaded by fellow Hearts of Hope team member Cyndi Livingstone in collaboration with the city, catches on and becomes a staple of the annual RFL event in Oldsmar.

“I hope so, because it’s a win-win for everyone,” Walters said.
