The 6th annual Guns n Hoses charity softball game will be held Saturday, July 25 at 4:00 p.m. at Bright House Field in Clearwater.
“Guns ‘n Hoses,” The 6th annual first responders charity softball game hosted by the Upper Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce, takes place on Saturday, July 25 at 4:00 p.m. at Bright House Field in Clearwater.
The event is a benefit for the Holiday Sharing Fund, which helps supply bikes and other toys to be distributed to needy kids during the holidays. Tickets cost $18 and include a ticket to the Clearwater Threshers game at 6:30, plus all-you-can-eat food items from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Mark Howe, who is a member of the UTBCC and the Holiday Sharing Fund boards, said the event has continued to grow every year since its inception.
“Originally it was a game between the sheriffs and Oldsmar city staff members,” Howe recently told Oldsmar Connect. “Now it’s between the fire fighters/first responders and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department, with a few Oldsmar officials thrown in, too.”
“Every year we grow it a little bit more,” he added. “This is the first year the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has officially endorsed it, so hopefully it gets a bigger response.”
Howe said $5.00 from every ticket sold goes the the Holiday Sharing Fund, and this year they set it up so people can also purchase tickets that will be distributed to local Boys and Girls Clubs.
“So it benefits two charities this year,” Howe said.
Hosting the event at Bright House Field, the 10-year-old spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies, is an honor that doesn’t get handed out to just any non profit organization, according to a representative of the team.
“It’s a huge deal to get on the field here,” Dan Madden, group sales manager for the Threshers, said. “We get a lot of requests to host events here, but we have to turn them down. Too many will tax the field.”
“But we have some long standing partnerships with certain events like Guns ‘n Hoses,” he added. “It’s very important for us in our role as a partner with the community to give back and support events like this.”
